Pumpkin Spice Dog Treats

A healthful dog treat made with pumpkin puree, whole wheat flour and molasses and a small amount of vegetable oil.  I usually make this recipe at Thanksgiving time when I make my Pumpkin Chiffon Pie because I always have a little left over pumpkin.

    • 1/2 cup canned pureed pumpkin
    • 4 tablespoons molasses
    • 4 tablesoons water
    • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
    • 2 cups whole wheat flour
    • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
    • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
    • 1 teaspoon allspice (or cinnamon if you prefer)


Preheat oven to 350F

Combine the pumpkin, molasses, vegetable oil, and water together in a large bowl.

Add the dry ingredients, flour, baking soda, baking powder and cinnamon to the bowl and stir until a soft dough forms.

You can make "drop" style cookies or rolled out.

Drop Style

Scoop about 2 tablespoons of dough and roll it into ball. Make sure to moisten your hands to keep the dough from sticking to you.  Place the balls on a greased cookie sheet or a sheet lined with parchment paper. Flatten with a fork dipped in flour, in a criss-cross pattern like you would a peanut butter cookie.

Roll Out

Form the dough together and pat out onto a lightly floured board. The dough will be soft. Roll out to about 1/4" thick.  Cut out shapes as desired.  Place the treats on a greased cookie sheet or a sheet lined with parchment paper.

Bake about 20 - 25 minutes until the treats are hard.  The rolled out treats may take less time to bake (depending on thickness) than the drop treats so check after 15 minutes and adjust your time as needed.

Allow treats to cool on a rack before storing.
