Zuppa Inglese Literally translates to "English soup". In reality this is a refrigerated Italian dessert similar to the British favorite, Trifle. The dessert is made with rum-sprinkled slices of sponge cake layered with a rich custard (pastry cream) or whipped cream (or both) and candied fruit or toasted almonds (or both). Epicurious has a good recipe you can try here.
More traditionally the alcohol used is some called Alchermes, (Alkermes) which is scarlet red colored Italian Liqueur. In the past this was something very difficult to buy in the U.S. but there is a version produced here by Heirloom Liqueurs which you can purchase online at Bitters & Bottles.
The bowl shown on this page is the traditional bowl you would use to prepare Zuppa Inglese or Trifle and is in fact referred to as a Trifle Bowl. The beautiful bowl show is made by Barski and can be purchased at Amazon.com: Trifle Bowl.
