Yeast extract is a yeast product with a rich, salty flavor used as a spread like peanut butter. Popular name brands include Marmite and Vegemite. These products are common in Australia, New Zealand, and Great Britain. These extracts can also be used to add more depth to certain soups, sauces, and even bread.
All of the yeast extract are high in sodium but also very high in B vitamins. Some contain MSG so you may also want to look for brands that display No MSG on the label if you are sensitive to that ingredient.
