Whipped Topping Mix is a dairy free dry mix made primarily from vegetable oil, corn starch, and flavorings. The product is low calorie offering only about 10 calories per serving and is promoted as a shelf stable, low calorie alternative to fresh whipped cream.
To use the product you simply place it in a bowl, add water and whip. The product works well as a topping and can be incorporated into recipes that blend the product in with other ingredients (like a chiffon pie).

As an alternative you can make your own emergency whipped topping (not dairy free) using powdered dry milk, vanilla, sugar and water.*
Combine the dry powdered milk and water in the bowl of a mixer and whip until soft peaks form, about 4 minutes on medium-high. Add the vanilla and mix again again for about 5 minutes until the peaks are firm. Gradually mix in the sugar and beat another minute. The topping should be used immediately as it will break down fairly quickly.
*The dry ingredients can be combined and stored in a container with a tight fitting lid for use later.
