The torpedo onion is an Italian variety dry onion which is red and torpedo-shaped. This onion originally came from Torpea, Italy and dates back to B.C. These are sweet red onions used raw for salads. Because many red onions tend to be pretty hot, the torpedo onion is a good choice if heat is not desirable.
This onion is not typically found all year long. Look for it in your grocery store starting around mid-winter into early spring. The torpedo is less common but may find it at your local farmer's market.
