A pantry staple, fresh tomatoes are washed then packed into cans along with juice or puree then cooked. Canned tomatoes are frequently more flavorful than fresh "green picked" tomatoes and make a good addition to soups, stews, sauces and other dishes. Canned tomatoes come in hundreds of varieties from very plain to seasoned, whole or chopped.
Look for varieties that don't have unnecessary sugar added. If you wish to avoid salt there are many salt-free products in the market.
