Granulate sugar is sugar crystals made from sugar cane or sugar beets. Also known as white sugar it is the most commonly used sugar in the U.S. Granulated sugar is used in baked goods as well as pastries and other desserts. Unfortunately it is overused in condiments and most packaged foods. For best health, read food labels carefully and avoid as much added sugar as you can.
One teaspoon of sugar is 16 calories. One 12 oz standard cola drink contains about 33grams of sugar which is equal to 2 2/3 tablespoons.
If you don't have granulated sugar you can substitute: Per each cup of sugar
1 cup packed light brown sugar OR> 1 3/4 cups unsifted powdered sugar (confectioners, icing sugar) OR> 1 cups superfine (caster sugar) OR< 2/3 cup of fructose, granulated (fruit sugar) this may make baked goods moister, more chewy and darker.
