Shugr is a new zero-calorie sugar substitute (released in 2005) from Switzerland. The product is made from three naturally occurring compounds, including erythritol, polydextrose, and tagatose. It is safe for diabetics and lactose-intolerant people.
The product was first developed by the SWISS DIET company. Shugr has the flavor of sugar (and no artificial aftertaste) and can be used and substituted for real sugar in cooking.
As of 2/16/2014, this company has gone out of business.
The brand name Shugr has been picked up by another company now operating out of Encino, California. The product is being described as "Natural Sweetener Zero Calorie is a Non-GMO Monk Fruit-based Sweetener that tastes just like sugar. This Lifestyle Friendly sweetener (Keto, Vegan/Vegetarian, Gluten-Free, Zero Carb, Zero Calorie, Diabetic Friendly) is a great substitute for sugar."
The company also sponsors another product called Natur Bakers Blend. This product is said to be "made from natural ingredients commonly found in fruits and vegetables. " The ingredients are very similar to but not exactly the same as the Shugr product. Bakers Blend is not calorie-free but has 40% fewer calories than real sugar but has a low glycemic index of 34 (comparable to an apple). This product can be used as a one-to-one substitute for sugar.
