What is Seltzer?
Seltzer water
is a type of flavorless carbonated water which can be man-made or occur naturally. According to the Encyclopedia of American Food and Drink the term first appeared in print in 1735. The name seltzer comes from "Selterser Wasser" a bottled mineral water from the Prussian town, Nieder Selters. The man-made version dates back to 1767 an invention of Joseph Priestly. This eventually (1840's) lead to the production of flavored varieties referred to as "soda pop".
Today seltzer water is used for mixed drinks and found in most every bar in the country.
