Sardines are small oily fish similar to herring. The term sardine does not refer to a specific species but in fact just means small fishes packed in tins. The most common sardines are pilchards, silds, or brislings. The bones are tiny so you eat the fish, bones and all on bread or with crackers.
Sardines are high in Omega 3 fatty acids so they are a healthful food. Sardines come packed in water, broth, oil, tomato or mustard. Store canned sardines for 1 -3 years in a cool pantry.
