A Mexican dish, refried beans (re-fried) are pinto beans which have been cooked, drained, then fried in lard (or oil). Re-fried beans originated as a way to use leftover cooked beans. Re-fried beans can be easily made at home or purchased in cans and even dehydrated form.
This is a common grocery store item. You can also find them at Walmart and Amazon.
Heat 1 can of pinto beans in a small pan. Use a bean masher or potato masher and mash the beans until the beans break apart but not totally smooth. Heat one tablespoon of lard or vegetable oil in a frying pan. Fry the beans until they are fully heated.
