Navy beans are small dried white bean used for making baked beans, or beans and ham hocks (Southern specialty) as well as various soups and salad dishes. The beans are also available canned. Both versions are common grocery store items.
My very favorite navy bean recipe cooks 1 lb of dry navy beans with 1 sliced onion and 1 meaty, smoked ham hock. This makes THE best beans. After the beans are cooked, remove the ham hock and allow it to cool enough so you can handle it. Cut it in smaller pieces and place it back in the beans for serving.
