Heavy confections made with a variety of fillings from savory (egg) to sweet (lotus paste) and countless other variations. Moon cakes are typically made for the Mid Autumn festival in China. See recipes for further examples.
The cakes are typically a weighty 200 grams but they are sometimes found smaller and may be called moon cookies. To make a moon cake, a dough is made along with the appropriate filling. Filling is surrounded by dough then pressed into a moon cake mold. The mold is rapped on the counter to get the cake to drop out, then the cake is coated with an egg wash and baked.
In China the moon cakes are passed around in a similar fashion as we in the U.S. give fruit cakes.
