What is Mangosteen?
Garcinia mangostana - A round fruit with a hard purplish skin, that turns to light green at the stem. The flesh is white, sweet, and considered by some as having the finest taste of all tropical fruit. The flavor is delicate with a slight citrus finish
Mangosteens are expensive in the U.S. The primary reason for this is that the fruit must be hand harvested when they are ripe. The fruit will not ripen once it is picked. The storage period is short, typically less than a month.
There is a lot of hype about the nutritional value of the fruit. In reality, most fruits are high in antioxidants and are beneficial to your health.
How To Select
The inside of the mangosteen is lobed similar to an orange. The more stigma lobes at the top of the fruit, the more fruit lobes inside. Select a mangosteen with deep color and one that just shows signs of softening.
