Hemp seed are the seeds from the cannabis sativa plant. Plants grown to harvest seed are low in THC and referred to as hemp (as opposed to marijuana). Hemp seed is very high in nutrients containing all of the essential amino acids to form a complete protein.
The seed can be purchase hemp seed whole which still has the outer bran intact which provides you with necessary fiber. If you purchase shelled hemp seed (also referred to as hemp hearts) then you still get the benefit of the essential amino acids but not the added benefit you get from increasing your fiber intake. You can also find hemp seed flour that can be used in baking.
Whole hemp seed has a nice crunchy texture and can be sprinkled on salads or soups, or can be ground and added to your favorite smoothie.
