A very tart berry native to Europe and the Americas. The little berries are related to currants and grown on short bushes. The skin of the berry is translucent and varies in color from pale greens to reds and even purple. The darker the berry the sweeter it is.
Gooseberries are used in pies, preserves and sauces to show off the tart flavor. The berries are ripe in later summer and can be found in some specialty stores and farmer's markets. They are also available canned, and sometimes frozen.
