What is Garlic?
Garlic
(Allium sativum common garlic) is part of the "lily" family and is closely related to shallots, garlic-chives, and leeks. The bulb is made of a series of bulblets called cloves. The garlic bulb has a papery exterior skin that varies in color from white to purple. There are many varieties of garlic with the "sativum" or "softneck" being the most common variety.

Substitute for Garlic
Here are some substitutes if you don't have fresh garlic:
You can use equal amounts of garlic chives
OR - chopped onions
OR - chopped shallots
OR - chopped leeks
OR - Per clove needed, instead use 1/4 tsp minced dried garlic
OR - 1/4 teaspoon garlic juice
OR - 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
Equivalents
1 small clove garlic = 1/2 tsp minced
1 head = 8 to 15 cloves
1 tsp minced = 1 to 2 medium cloves
