Quick Find:
Durian
Other Names:
civet fruit
What is Durian?
Native to Borneo and Sumatra, the durian is probably most well-know to the uninitiated for its strong, unpleasant odor. The fruit is so odoriferous that it is banned on some subways in Asia and confined to restricted areas of many open markets. Once you get past the prickly exterior and "civet cat" aroma the fruit is said to taste quite exotic with a slightly onion flavor. Given I'm of the "can't get past the smell" camp I can only provide a hear-say report.
Fresh or frozen durian can be found in Asian markets. You can find it whole or cut up and a paste is available as well. The durian is mostly eaten out of hand as a fresh fruit but different cultures prepare it in a variety of ways including boiled and eaten as a vegetable, mixed with rice or even with pumpkin.
