A British product which is a quick mix for making custard. The product was developed by Alfred Bird in the 1840's. He developed the product for his wife who was allergic to eggs. Read more about the history of custard and custard powder and learn why the terms custard and pudding became confused.

To use, simply mix 2 tablespoons of powder with 1 tablespoon sugar and enough milk and mix to a paste. Add 1 pint of simmering milk, and heat gently to the boil. Use this sauce over sliced pound cake or fresh fruit.
If you don't have custard powder then try one of these alternatives:
For one tablespoon of custard powder needed use:
1 tablespoon instant vanilla pudding mix such as JELLO or Royal brand. OR
1 tablespoon corn starch plus 1 teaspoon vanilla extract and pinch of salt OR
1 tablespoon water chestnut flour plus 1 teaspoon vanilla extract.
Corn starch, salt, flavoring and annotto for color.
