If you have family members that don't like Brussels sprouts, try roasting them which (in my opinion) improves the flavor 100%. You can even toss in some freshly grated Parmesan cheese before serving. See recipes below.
If don't have Brussels sprouts (or don't like them) here are some reasonable substitutes:
1 lb fresh brussels sprouts = 4 cups cooked 1 qt = 1 1/4 lbs. OR 5 cups 10 oz frozen = 1 1/2 to 2 cups cooked OR 18 to 24 sprouts

The origins of this crop are not clear. Although the name is a reference to the country name, it is more likely the name refers to varietals of the plant popular in France in the 19th century specifically Chou de Bruxells Ordinaire.
