Breadfruit (artocarpus odoratissimus) is a large, green tropical fruit related to the Jackfruit. It is quite pungent, starchy and commonly roasted over coals and eaten as a vegetable. It does develop some sugar when ripened and is used in a few dessert dishes.
The breadfruit is difficult to find in most of the U.S. but is available canned in some Asian or Latino stores. The fresh fruit can easily be found in Hawaii where it is ubiquitous. Also, if you are in a location with a large Asian population you can find them in Asian grocery stores.
