There are over 7000 varieties of apples. Aside from being eaten as a fresh fruit apples are used to make pies, tarts, juices, applesauce, jams, jellies and vinegars.
One of the favorite, and readily available apples in the U.S. are the green Granny Smith apples. This, crisp green apple can be eaten out of hand, made into pies and fruit salads and is even used for the famous Apple Martini (Appletini). The apple was actually developed in Australia back in 1868 by Maria Ann Smith.
