A small, sweet, buttery flavored tree nut.
Almonds
can be eaten at any stage including green as is the practice in some Middle Eastern countries. Typically almonds are sold raw or roasted and sometimes without skins (blanched). California produces 75 percent of worlds almonds.
Substitute for Almonds
If you don't have almonds you can substitute
Hazelnuts
OR> Pistachio nuts
OR> If you don't want nuts use chopped water chestnuts for the "crunch"
OR> Grapenuts cereal (for cookies or other baked goods)
Equivalents
1 lb. almonds in shell = 5 - 6 oz. shelled, 1 1/4 cup shelled, 3 1/3 to 3 2/3 cups chopped or 2 2/3 to 3 cups ground
1/2 cup ground = 47.5 grams
1/3 cup whole almonds = 1/2 cup slivered almonds
