Dog Biscuit Treat Decorating Ideas

Once you bake your doggie some special treats it is fun to decorate them as well. This page lists a variety of ideas specifically for decorating dog biscuits and treats.

2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup wheat germ
1/2 cup brewer’s yeast (available at health-food stores)
1 teaspoon salt
3 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 cup chicken stock 

Heat oven to 400 degrees.
Line a sheet pan with parchment paper (or grease the pan). Mix flour, wheat germ, brewer’s yeast, and salt together in a medium bowl.  In another mixing bowl, combine oil and garlic. Alternately add 1 cup chicken stock and flour mixture in 3 parts; mix until well combined. Turn out onto a floured surface and knead about 2 minutes by hand.  The dough will be sticky.

Roll dough out to about 1/2 inch thick. Cut out various shapes and place on prepared baking sheets. Bake 20 - 25 minutes. Turn off oven, leaving oven door closed. Leave pan in oven for 1 1/2 hours or up to overnight to allow the treats to dry.

Store the treats in zip-closure bags in the refrigerator or you can freeze them as well.

Perishable Frostings
These can be used for doggie cakes or cookies and should be refrigerated.

Banana Carob
From Three Dog Bakery

2 cup mashed banana
1 tablespoon butter
6 tablespoon carob flour
2 teaspoons vanilla
3 tablespoon unbleached flour
1 teaspoon cinnamon

Blend thoroughly and spread on cool cake. Sprinkle with chopped pecans. The frosting contains carob, which is a safe chocolate-like flavor substitute for chocolate.

Cream Cheese Frosting
12 ounces nonfat cream cheese, room temperature
2 teaspoons honey

Beat with a hand mixer until fluffy.  Frost cookies with a spatula or fill a pastry bag fitted with a fine tip and pipe onto cookies.

Cinnamon Vanilla variation:  To the above recipe, add 1 teaspoon of vanilla, and 3 teaspoons of cinnamon.

Doggie toothpaste - this is a suggestion we found on the web, we have not tried it.

Flavored White Chocolate Disks - Wilton Industries makes a line of white chocolate disks which come in a variety of colors including like red, green, pink, brown, and white.

The chips can be heated in the microwave or in the top of a double boiler on the cook top.  We found using the double boiler more flexible than the microwave.  You can add a teaspoon or so vegetable oil to make the mixture flow on more easily.  Frosting can be spread or put into a pastry bag.
