Ras el hanout


[raz-el-HAHN-ut] A complex Moroccan mixture of many spices, containing up to 100 different spices. The spices used depend on the available spices and the preferences of the person making it, who generally has their own unique blend. Some of the spices used are anise, cinnamon, cloves, ginger, nutmeg, cayenne, peppercorns, cardamom, mace, dried flowers (such as lavender and rose), nigella, galangal and turmeric. Ras el hanout is used in couscous, rice, vegetables and meat dishes.

UCSF Researchers say products with added sugar should be controlled just like alcohol or tobacco. They are  advocating that the government take control of the situation because the citizens are unable to do so. The solutions they suggest include doubling the price of sodas via a sugar tax, put age restrictions on purchase of products containing added sugar and legislate which stores are allowed to sell products with added sugar.
