Pandanas leaves

Other names: bai toey hom, daun pandan, screwpine leaves, kewra

Long narrow dark green leaves from the Screwpine or Pandanas tree. (Pandanus amaryllifolius Roxb). The leaves are called hala in Hawaii and commonly referred to as the screw-pine. The Thai word for pandan is bai toey hom.

The leaves have a sweet aroma which can be used as a flavoring for rice and for puddings and other desserts. The pigment is also used as food coloring. Pandanas leaves can be purchased in "bundles" in some Asian grocery stores. Other products made from the pandan include pandan essence and pandan juice.

UCSF Researchers say products with added sugar should be controlled just like alcohol or tobacco. They are advocating that the government take control of the situation because the citizens are unable to do so. The solutions they suggest include doubling the price of sodas via a sugar tax, put age restrictions on purchase of products containing added sugar and legislate which stores are allowed to sell products with added sugar.
