Old fashioned oats

Other names: rolled oats, old fashioned oatmeal

A term created by the Quaker Oat Company that describes rolled oats.  Rolled oats are steamed, rolled out then flaked.  This process helps them to cook more quickly than steel cut oats.  This type of oat is more "old fashioned" than newer quick-cooking types of oats.

Substitute for old fashioned oats

Steel-cut oats (longer cooking time) OR Instant oats, may become more "mushy" if used in baked goods.

Equivalents

1 cup uncooked   =   1 3/4 cups cooked
1lb = 5 cups uncooked

UCSF Researchers say products with added sugar should be controlled just like alcohol or tobacco. They are  advocating that the government take control of the situation because the citizens are unable to do so. The solutions they suggest include doubling the price of sodas via a sugar tax, put age restrictions on purchase of products containing added sugar and legislate which stores are allowed to sell products with added sugar.
