Fat Free Half and Half

Fat free half and half is a dairy product that combines skim milk with other ingredients including corn syrup, a thickener like carrageenan. There are typically other stabilizers as well. The product is meant to be a cholesterol and fat free alternative to conventional half and half.

Of the brands we tried, Land O' Lakes had the best flavor. Depending on your specific health issues this may or may not be an appropriate product for you. While there are benefits to decreasing fat and cholesterol, adding more sugar (1 gram per tablespoon) to your diet may not be the best alternative.

Ingredients

Nonfat Milk, Corn Syrup, Cream (Adds a Trivial Amount of Fat), Artificial Color (an Ingredient Not Normally Found in Half & Half), Sodium Citrate, Dipotassium Phosphate, Mono & Diglycerides (Adds a Trivial Amount of Fat), Carrageenan, Vitamin A Palmitate.

Amazing to see that this type of product is recommended in recipes by South Beach Diet. So far, I've avoided making anything with this, but would be open to suggestions for a good substitute.

While I strive to reduce fat in my diet I do draw the line at substituting chemicals for "real food". I say use the half and half called for in your recipe and reduce your serving portion size. Additionally, serve the recipe for "special" occasions. Sometimes low fat or non fat yogurt may be substituted but it depends on the recipe.
