Cardamom pods

Other names: green cardamon, cardomom (common misspellings)

Cardamom, common name for certain plant species native to India and southeastern Asia, and for their aromatic seeds (see Ginger). The true cardamom has large leaves and white flowers with blue stripes and yellow borders and grows to about 3 m (about 10 ft) in height. The fruit is a small capsule with 8 to 16 brown seeds. The seeds are used as a spice.

Substitute for cardamom pods

For 10 whole pods substitute 1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom OR substitute ground cinnamon, or combine half cinnamon and half nutmeg

Equivalents

1 pod   =   1 tsp. ground, 18 to 20 seeds / 10 whole pods = 1 1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom
