How To Heat And Store Tortillas
Some simple tips for heating and storing corn or flour tortillas.
How To Heat Tortillas
Stove Top
To heat and soften tortillas for table use or recipes, place one tortilla at a time directly over low gas flame and use tongs to turn until evenly warmed.
Skillet Heating
Heat tortills on medium-hot ungreased non-stick skillet or cured comal turning over frequently until hot.
For a crispy tortilla, fry both sides of the tortilla on an oiled non-stick skillet.
Oil-Free Crispy Tortillas
To crisp oil-free, toast tortilla in warm oven or a non-stick cookie sheet until golden brown.
Microwave Tips:
To heat corn or flour tortillas in the microwave, place stacks of 5 or 6 tortillas between two slightly dampened paper towels and heat on high 45 seconds or until warm. If your flour tortillas are sticking together, place them in the microwave 5-10 seconds for each tortilla.
Steam Heat
Place tortillas, wrapped in foil or a damp dish cloth in the top layer of a bamboo steamer. Top the steamer with a lid and place over a pan of lightly boiling water for about 10 minutes until warmed.
Refrigerate
Place tortilla package on flat surface and press air out open end of a resealable bag. Reseal and refrigerate package. Tortillas will last several days to a week refrigerated. Make sure to keep your corn tortillas in a well-sealed bag because the aroma will transfer to other foods.
Freezing
Tortillas can be frozen in air tight containers, defrosted and reheated for later use.
